When standard medications and therapy fail to lift the weight of Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), medical technology offers a different path. Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy uses a small, FDA-approved device—often called a “pacemaker for the brain”—to target the body’s natural neural highways.

How the Device Works

Unlike daily pills, VNS is an implantable system. During a short outpatient procedure, a pulse generator is placed under the skin of the chest. A thin, flexible wire then connects this generator to the left vagus nerve in the neck.

Pulse Delivery: The device sends regular, mild electrical pulses to the brain via the vagus nerve.
Mood Regulation: These signals reach areas of the brain responsible for mood, such as the limbic system, helping to “reset” dysfunctional neural circuits.

What to Expect
