What is Spravato?
Spravato (esketamine), in our Inglewood Spravato office, is a prescription nasal spray medication used to treat major depressive disorder in adults who have not found relief from other treatments. It is a derivative of ketamine and represents a different class of antidepressant therapy compared to traditional oral medications. Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved treatment specifically indicated for:
-
Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD): Depression in adults who have tried at least two prior oral antidepressants without adequate response.
-
Depressive symptoms in adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with acute suicidal ideation or behavior.
Because of its specific effects and safety requirements, Spravato (esketamine) must be administered under the supervision of a healthcare provider in a certified treatment center.
How Does Spravato Work
Unlike traditional antidepressants, which typically target neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine, Spravato (esketamine), in our Inglewood Spravato office, is thought to work on the glutamate system. Glutamate is the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in your brain.
Spravato (esketamine) acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist. In theory, by modulating these receptors, it triggers a cascade of chemical reactions that help restore neural connections and promote neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form new connections and heal pathways that may have been damaged by chronic depression.
How is Spravato different from traditional psychiatric medications?
Most standard oral antidepressants take several weeks or months to build up in your system and produce a noticeable mood improvement. Inglewood Spravato works much faster—often within hours to a few days after your first dose.
Additionally, standard oral medications are swallowed daily at home. Spravato (esketamine) is a self-administered nasal spray that you take exclusively at a REMS-certified medical facility, (REMS = Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy), under direct clinical observation.
What Are the Steps Involved to Get Spravato?
- Psychiatric Evaluation: A psychiatrist will evaluate your medical and mental health history to confirm if you meet the criteria for Treatment-Resistant Depression or acute suicidal ideation.
- Medical Screening: Your doctor will review your cardiovascular health, current medications, and past medical history to ensure Spravato is safe for you.
- REMS Enrollment: Because Spravato (esketamine) is controlled under a strict safety program (SPRAVATO® REMS), both you and our team will complete necessary enrollment forms and review safety guidelines before starting.
- Treatment Planning: Your psychiatrist will coordinate your Spravato schedule in conjunction with an ongoing oral antidepressant.
What is it like to receive Spravato?
Inglewood Spravato sessions follow a structured in-office routine to prioritize your comfort and safety:
- Self-Administration: You will administer the nasal spray device(s) yourself under the guidance and direct observation of medical staff.
-
Observation Period: After taking the dose, you must remain in a comfortable, quiet room at the healthcare facility for at least two(2) hours while medical staff monitor your vital signs (such as blood pressure) and observe you for side effects like sedation or dissociation.
- Treatment Schedule:
-
Weeks 1 to 4: Typically twice a week.
- Weeks 5 to 8: Typically once a week.
- Week 9 onwards: Typically once every 1 to 4 weeks for maintenance, based on your response.
-
-
Post-Treatment Restrictions: You cannot drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day following a treatment session. You will need a trusted friend, family member, or ride service to take you home.

Physician Recommended.
Patient Preferred.
Dr. Cochran at The Neuroscience and TMS center has served as my psychiatric care physician for the past 5 years. I have made tremendous progress while seeing her. She is attentive, thorough, and professional. I refer her to everyone I know in need of psychiatric care because I trust her and her staff completely. I am very thankful to be a patient of the Neuroscience and TMS center.

This hands down is the BEST doctor’s office I've ever been to. Not just on a psychiatric level, but just a medical setting in general. I love Dr. Becker and I'm beyond grateful that I found him. He is very personable and just one of the easiest people to talk to. And the front desk is great too and that goes a long way! So yes, 5 stars! I recommend this to anyone who needs to find a good and relaxed environment for psychiatry.
