Elegance and Impact: Highlights from the 2026 APA Foundation Gala

Dr Chan and Dr Cochran 2026 APA Gala

The stunning, historic San Francisco City Hall served as the breathtaking backdrop for a night of purpose, community, and celebration on Monday, May 18th, 2026. Beneath the venue’s grand cathedral ceilings, majestic dome, and elegant Beaux-Arts architecture, members of the psychiatric community gathered for the annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) Foundation Event.

The evening was much more than a celebration—it was an unforgettable fundraiser dedicated to the APA Foundation’s core mission: Creating a Mentally Healthy Nation where we live, learn, work, worship, and play.

Investing in the Next Generation

Demonstrating a shared commitment to the future of psychiatry, Michelle Cochran, M.D. and Adam Chan, M.D. proudly stepped up as key supporters for the fundraiser. Together, they purchased VIP tickets and sponsored a resident attendee, ensuring that the next generation of psychiatric leaders had a seat at the table for this impactful evening.

Reconnecting with Mentors and Colleagues

The gala provided a wonderful opportunity for attendees to network, share laughs, and reconnect. For Drs. Cochran and Chan, a distinct highlight of the night was getting reacquainted with their shared mentor, Mary Helen Davis, M.D. They also spent the evening celebrating alongside newly elected APA President-Elect Rahn Bailey, M.D., as well as esteemed APA Assembly colleagues, including Chelsey Atwater, M.D. and Connie Dunlap, M.D. —

A Focus on Local Action and Severe Mental Illness

Attendees had the privilege of hearing directly from the San Francisco Mayor, who spoke passionately about the city’s ongoing local efforts, strategic initiatives, and targeted care programs designed to address severe mental illness within their homeless population.

It was a timely reminder of how national psychiatric leadership intersects with vital local community action.
